Reporting made easier for fraud victims

People who fall victim to ID fraudsters now need to make just one telephone call to notify the credit agencies.

The three credit reference agencies – Experian, Equifax and Callcredit – have set up a system whereby a call to one of the agencies means that the other two will also be alerted to the fraud.

Until now victims of ID criminals have had to notify each agency on an individual basis.

Under the new reporting scheme, the three agencies will combine to repair the damage to the victim’s credit files.

People who suffer ID theft will be provided with a credit report and will be told how their case is progressing.

Mark Ward, who is head of consumer services at Callcredit, said: “By jointly taking on responsibility for managing the recovery process, the three credit reference agencies are aiming to make getting financially back on track much easier for the individual involved.”

Anyone who has fallen foul of ID fraud can use one of the following numbers: Experian on 0844 481 8000, Equifax on 0800 121 4752 or Callcredit on 0113 220 1632.
